Protect Your Vehicle with Regular Oil Changes

Oil Change Baton Rouge, LAAt Chabill’s Tire & Auto Service in Baton Rouge, LA, we’ve had a lot of experience with regular maintenance like oil changes. We sometimes hear customers asking why regular oil changes are so important, so we’d like to explain that briefly and clear up any questions.

Your car represents a big investment on your part, and one of the easiest and most certain ways to get the most out of your investment is with regular oil changes. The internal moving parts of your car’s engine run on extremely close tolerances, and motor oil lubricates those parts and reduces friction. That thin coating of oil around moving parts will break down over time, however -- heat, contamination from combustion by-products and microscopic metal shavings will make motor oil lose its effectiveness. The paper element in the oil filter is designed to trap contaminants as they circulate, but motor oil still needs to be changed at regular intervals with other routine repairs.

At Chabill’s Tire & Auto Service in Baton Rouge, LA, petroleum-based motor oils were the standard for years. Even with improvements in formulations and additives, petroleum-based oils still need to be changed every 5,000 miles or so (check your owner’s manual for manufacturer’s recommended intervals). Many people now use synthetic motor oil in their vehicles, and many manufacturers now recommend synthetics, which can go as long as 15,000 miles between changes. If the environment is a concern for you, “re-refined” motor oils are available now and offer quality and performance that rivals virgin oil. If you’re not real good at keeping track of that kind of thing, some newer vehicles now feature technology that notifies drivers when it’s time for an oil change.

With improvements in machining, build quality and design, it’s now not unusual at all to get over 200,000 miles out of a late model car. Your best chance at getting that sort of longevity is with regular oil changes and auto repairs. Call today for an appointment with Chabill’s Tire & Auto Service in Baton Rouge, LA and surrounding areas.
