Transmission Fluid Flush
The list of tasks can be long and overwhelming for many drivers when it comes to tackling vehicle maintenance. If you need some guidance beyond regular oil changes and tire rotations, you would likely benefit from having a trusted expert take a closer look. Our ASE-Certified technicians at all of our Chabill’s Tire and Auto Service locations would be happy to examine your transmission and determine if your vehicle is due for a transmission fluid flush.
What Is A Transmission Fluid Flush?
A transmission fluid flush is a routine maintenance procedure to replace the old transmission fluid with fresh, clean fluid. It differs from a transmission fluid change in which only a portion of the fluid is replaced. A transmission fluid flush completely removes all of the old fluid from the transmission system and replaces it with new fluid.
The transmission fluid flush process usually involves the following steps.
Draining The Old Fluid: First, the old transmission fluid is drained from the transmission pan or through a dedicated drain plug, effectively removing most of the old fluid from the system.
Flushing The System: Through the use of special equipment, the transmission system is flushed with a cleaning solution to completely remove any lingering residue, sludge or contaminants.
Refilling With New Fluid: Once the system has been properly flushed and cleaned, the transmission is refilled with the appropriate type and quantity of fresh transmission fluid as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
Testing And Inspection: Once the fluid flush and replacement are complete, a series of tests to ensure proper transmission operation (including checking fluid levels, inspecting for leaks and testing the transmission’s shifting performance) are conducted.
Our experts recommend a fluid flush as part of a regular maintenance schedule to help extend the life of the transmission, as well as ensure safe and reliable operation. Over time, transmission fluid becomes contaminated with debris, sludge and metal particles. This can impair transmission performance and lead to premature wear and damage if not addressed.
What Are The Benefits Of A Transmission Fluid Flush?
Enhanced Performance: Fresh transmission fluid maintains proper hydraulic pressure, lubrication and effective cooling within the transmission. It results in smoother shifting and improved acceleration overall performance.
Optimal Transmission Life: Regular fluid flushes help prevent the transmission from overheating. It also prevents wear and damage caused by contaminated or degraded fluid, leading to an extended transmission lifespan.
Avoidance Of Costly Repairs: By eliminating harmful contaminants and ensuring proper fluidlevels and appropriate quality, a transmission fluid flush can prevent eventual transmission repairs and replacements.
What Is The Difference Between A Transmission Fluid Flush And Changing Transmission Fluid?
The main difference between a transmission fluid flush and changing transmission fluid lies in the extent to which the old fluid is replaced and the extent of the procedure.
As previously mentioned, a transmission fluid flush involves completely removing the old transmission fluid from the transmission system and replacing it with fresh fluid. A flush removes virtually all of the old fluid from the transmission, including fluid in the transmission pan, torque converter, cooler lines and other components.
Changing transmission fluid involves draining a portion of the old fluid from the transmission pan and replacing it with fresh fluid. While a fluid change replaces some of the old fluid, it does not remove all of the fluid from the transmission system. Fluid in the torque converter, cooler lines and other components may remain unchanged. While not as comprehensive as a flush, regular fluid changes can still contribute to transmission health and longevity.
Both procedures are important for the maintenance, health and performance of the transmission. The choice between them may depend on factors like vehicle age, mileage and maintenance history. It’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s recommended service intervals, or consult with one of our qualified technicians to determine the best course of action for your vehicle.
How Often Should My Transmission Be Flushed?
Your vehicle’s owner’s manual will contain information about how often a transmission flush is recommended for your model. Typical recommended transmission flush intervals can range from every 30,000 to 50,000 miles to every 3 to 5 years.
How Do You Know If You Need To Flush Your Transmission Fluid?
Spotting a transmission issue on your own is possible if you know what you’re looking for. It’s important to remember that most transmission issues begin as small problems, but they can become much worse over time. By promptly addressing any necessary transmission repairs, you are doing everything you can to save yourself both time and money. Signs that it is time to get your transmission checked include:
- Discolored or burnt-smelling transmission fluid
- Delayed, jerky or rough shifting
- Your transmission seems to be slipping
- Your transmission is abnormally loud
- You notice leaking transmission fluid
- Unusual noises, such as grinding when shifting gears
- Your transmission is overheating
- You notice problems with the clutch
- Your “Check Engine” light is on
