Chabill’s Tire And Auto Service Cooling System
Your car’s cooling system is one of many essential components of your vehicle. Inside your engine, spark plugs ignite the fuel in the cylinders to create small explosions that drive your vehicle forward. With these small explosions come scorching temperatures that can destroy your engine if not properly regulated and controlled. If all of that sounds a little intimidating, don’t worry. The automotive experts at Chabill’s Tire and Auto Service can handle necessary cooling system repairs for all makes and models. Our trusted technicians are highly knowledgeable about various types of cooling systems. They have completed extensive training and certification. All you have to do is bring your vehicle to us, and we will take care of the rest!
Types Of Vehicle Cooling Systems
Two primary types of cooling systems are found in most vehicles on the road today. They have some key differences. Understanding the two types is important for properly maintaining your vehicle and identifying potential problems early.
- Liquid-Cooled: Liquid cooling is a more modern approach to cooling, and it is used on most of today’s vehicles. A liquid coolant is sent through passages in the engine to absorb the heat it produces. When the coolant moves down these passages in the engine, it is cooled by the air traveling through the vehicle’s grill. During extremely cold temperatures, you must ensure that you have appropriate levels of antifreeze in your vehicle to prevent the freezing of liquid coolants and other liquids in your engine.
- Air-Cooled: Air-cooled engines are not as common in vehicles today, but you might find them in older cars or classic models. This cooling method is less common because it isn’t as effective over long distances. Making a long road trip on an air-cooled engine would be next to impossible.
- Normal Wear And Tear Needs Routine Repair: Neglecting your cooling system for even a short period can result in serious damage and sometimes even complete engine failure. Over time, your car’s cooling system will develop scale deposits that restrict coolant flow, and the cooling system will need to be flushed. Having a properly trained technician perform regular checkups of belts, hoses, pumps and fluids will ensure that your vehicle remains properly cooled and fully functional for years. Properly maintaining the engine’s components can support the proper function of the cooling system. If your vehicle’s cooling system is functioning optimally, your engine is effectively protected from damage caused by extreme heat.
- Signs Your Cooling System Needs Attention: Your vehicle’s cooling system is crucial in keeping the engine at a safe operating temperature. It’s important to watch for signs that indicate your vehicle’s cooling system may need repairs or maintenance.
- Overheating: Overheating is the most obvious sign of cooling system trouble. Watch for warning lights on the dashboard or a temperature gauge in the red zone. Both can signal that your engine is overheating. Steam or smoke coming from under the hood is a clear sign of cooling system trouble requiring immediate attention.
- Leaking Or Low Coolant Levels: Check your vehicle’s coolant reservoir regularly. If the coolant level is always low, there is likely a leak within the system. You should also look for puddles of coolant under your vehicle when parked. Coolant is typically green, orange or pink in color.
- Discolored Coolant: The coolant should be clear and brightly colored. If it appears muddy or rusty, there could be contaminants in the cooling system that must be addressed.
- Abnormal Noises: Listen for unusual noises (such as squealing or grinding) from the engine area. These sounds are not usual. They could indicate a problem with the water pump, fan belt or other cooling system components.
- Radiator Issues: Check for visible signs of damage to the radiator, such as corrosion, cracks or leaks. Also, inspect the radiator cap to ensure it is sealed properly.
- Heater Malfunctions: The cabin’s heating system relies on the cooling system to function effectively. If your heater isn’t working as it should, it may be a sign of problems within the cooling system.
- Performance Problems: Engine performance issues (such as reduced power or fuel efficiency) could be related to overheating or cooling system problems.
If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to address the problem promptly. Cooling system issues can lead to serious engine damage if left untreated. Consult one of our trusted technicians for an accurate diagnosis and necessary repairs.
